Prevent this by using a leather conditioner, which is an emulsion of natural oils and waxes that are easily absorbed into the leather without leaving residue behind. The conditioner is also good to hide, or even remove, undesired scratches.

Apply to a cotton cloth and then to the piece. Let it completely dry before using it again.
If your leather piece gets wet, let it naturally dry before applying the conditioner.
It depends on the look you are going for. For a fresh look apply the conditioner every 3 month, If you want your leather piece lot look vintage condition every 6-12 months.
